How to Choose an Assisted Living Home in Singapore: A Family Checklist
· Blue Atria
Choosing where a parent will live and be cared for is one of the hardest, most emotional decisions a family makes. There is no shortage of options in Singapore — from nursing homes to home care to assisted living — and every family's situation is different. This checklist is here to help you compare homes calmly and ask the right questions.
Start with your parent's actual needs
Before visiting anywhere, get clear on the level of support your parent genuinely needs:
- Do they need help with daily activities like bathing, dressing, and meals?
- Do they have medical conditions requiring medication management or nursing oversight?
- Are mobility, falls, or memory a concern?
- How important is companionship and social activity to their wellbeing?
Matching the home to real needs — not worst-case fears — keeps you from over- or under-paying for care.
Care and staffing
The quality of a home comes down to its people.
- Caregiver-to-resident ratio. Smaller homes (8–12 residents) usually mean more personal attention than large institutions.
- 24/7 cover. Is there trained care around the clock, including overnight?
- Nursing oversight. How often does a nurse assess residents, and how is medication managed?
- Staff training and turnover. Familiar, consistent caregivers matter enormously to seniors.
Safety and the environment
- Is the home step-free, with grab bars, good lighting, and safe flooring?
- Does it feel like a home — or like a hospital ward?
- Is it clean, calm, and well-kept throughout, not just in the reception area?
- How are emergencies handled?
Food, activities, and daily life
Day-to-day quality of life is easy to overlook and deeply important.
- Are meals freshly prepared, with options for dietary needs?
- Is there a real daily programme — exercise, activities, outings — or just a television?
- Are mealtimes and activities social?
- Can residents keep their own routines and preferences?
Location and family involvement
- Is it convenient enough that you will actually visit often?
- Are visiting hours open and flexible?
- How does the home keep families updated?
- Can your parent keep their own GP or specialist?
Cost and transparency
- Is the monthly fee all-inclusive, or are there many add-ons?
- What exactly is and isn't covered?
- Is the home an AIC-approved provider, and may your parent be eligible for subsidies?

Questions to ask on a visit
A visit tells you more than any brochure. Ask:
- What does a typical day look like here?
- Who will be caring for my parent, and how long have they worked here?
- How do you handle a fall, a medical issue, or a bad day?
- How do you keep families informed?
- Can we visit again, unannounced, before deciding?
Trust your instincts
Numbers and checklists matter — but so does how a place feels. Are residents relaxed and engaged? Do caregivers speak to them with warmth and respect? A home that feels genuinely caring is worth a great deal.
